Access to healthcare in rural communities of the developing world is often limited and delayed. Many school-aged children in rural areas do not have access to essential health screenings, including vision checks. This paper presents evidence showing that vision screenings enable individuals to access accurate vision health information and treatment which can offer potentially large social benefits. We implement a multiple-year follow-up vision screening program covering children in primary to secondary schools in rural counties of northwestern China. Using a cohort difference-in-differences approach, which takes advantage of variations in the timing of the program's rollout, we find that the vision screening program positively impacts its participants' vision. The effectiveness of the program is influenced by children's subsequent behavior. The positive impact on vision is more pronounced when the vision screening is paired with free eyeglasses vouchers for those in need, when students take up this offer, or if information friction is less through better internet access.
